(A NEW LOOK AT) CARD FANS by Lewis Ganson
(paperback stapled, mint condition) 1983 Supreme 2nd edition
32 pages.
this book is from new-old dealer inventory, and so is in new condition, never previously owned.
Although I have a few fanning decks in my magic collection, I admit that I do not use them in my shows. But that said, I got some really good ideas and effects from this booklet that I do use to supplement my card performances. Although this book is focused on the colorful displays of fanning decks, I recommend it for card workers who want to add a little flash and/or a few magical quickies to their card work.
For example, the fan, steal and production (explained on pgs 20-21) is easily done with your working pack of cards, close-up, anytime, and provides a quick and very surprising magical add-on to your card work.
Or, what about the double fan separation (pgs 17-18) which can provide a very cool finish to any routine where your apparently shuffled deck is magically separated by suit colors -- rather than the usual ribbon spread across the table to display the color separation climax, you could make an impressive fan, split it in two, and then turn the two fans to face the audience who see you have somehow put all the blacks in one fan and the reds in the other !
Even learning the correct technique (in detail, pgs 8-11) to make a standard fan will enhance your card work. Lay people find a perfectly spaced and symmetrical card fan to be incredibly impressive. The Giant Fan section has more useful flourish fans for any cardworker -- when working a larger table, and I need a card selected, I will sometimes choose someone a bit farther away from me. Realizing they are not quite within reach to choose a card, I do a quick Giant Fan, and extend it for the selection. Amusing and impressive at the same time.
You get the idea -- there are a lot of interesting techniques and info which the creative cardworker will find useful.
Of course, if you like to do colorful fans with your custom fanning decks, you will find much much more in this excellent booklet.
