by STANTON CARLISLE
HARDBOUND. MINT. undated, but circa mid 1970's published by Supreme 1st edition. 87 pages
I still remember watching Kreskin, blindfolded, holding the wrist of a theater manager (or whoever it was who booked his performance), moving through a large audience, apparently guided by psychic impressions from the person he held. After moving somewhat haphazardly up the theater aisles, and across the rows, Kreskin began to hone in on his target, and moved methodically closer and closer to specific seat in the large theater. He took off the blindfold, asked the seated spectator to please stand, so Kreskin could reach below the seat -- finding taped to it, his paycheck for the performance.
I always assumed this was done with a confederate -- that it was an elaborate set-up and hoax. But (as a newbie to magic), I had never heard of Contact Mind reading. If you are not familiar with Contact Mind Reading (CMR), it is a bit like the classic pendulum trick on steroids. That is to say, it is very close to real mentalism, because there are no gimmicks -- you pretty much do exactly what you say. You tune in and "read" the spectator's sub-conscious mind.
In essence, if someone knows the location of a hidden object, you can take hold of that person and slowly move with them nearer and nearer to the target. The spectator who you contact is as amazed as everyone esle.
The principles of CMR can be used for close-up "dowsing" of objects as well.
But note: this technique requires patience, practice and confidence. You will not be doing CMR the day after reading this book.
Not too much has been available in the magic literature about CMR -- Fitzkee's and Hellstrom's booklets, Banacek's DVD, and some (now hard to find) 2004 DVDs by Stuart Cumberland. Carlisle's book is very detailed and gives lots of good info on the subject.
Check out the photo of the table of contents to get a good idea of how much good stuff you will find in this slim, but important book. The sample page shot gives you an idea of the format.
New-old dealer inventory, so like new and unused, even though it is 40+ years old.
NOTE: the back of the dustjacket has a "crease" all the way from top to bottom -- tried to show it in the last photo. I have had three different copies of this book over the years (including the one in my own library), and they all have this exact same crease. Not sure what caused it, but it seems to be part of the original production of the dustjacket, and not later damage.
