Description
Recent estate purchase. Both framed at a San Pedro, California framer. Foil label on one with address. Estimating 1960s plus or minus a decade. Nice MCM frames. These Japanese Woodblock prints are Kasamatsu Shiro "Sea of Echigo" and Kawase Hasui "Chunum Temple".
They look fantastic together, so selling as a pair. Colors are dark and fresh looking. Both are signed as shown.
Outer frames measure 19 inches by just under 14 1/2 inches. The mat opening measures approx 14 inches by 9 1/4 inches. Foil label on one from California picture framer
"The Picture?? 1106 S. Pacific San Pedro"
.
The wood frames have a cool vintage 60s or so look, distressed gold with green. Mat burlap-like textured mat. Brown backing paper on back is intact, but slightly torn as shown. One of the pictures hangs with a wire, the other with saw tooth picture hanger, so maybe one was replaced at sometime as the frames are identical.
A few things worth mentioning. On close inspection on the
Kasamatsu Shiro,
there are three light spots, looks like moisture at one time, on one of the mats on the side. I see nothing
on the print
next to this mat but have not opened the frames up. These spots are pretty light.
See 2nd to last photo.
On the
Kawase Hasui in the upper right corner there is some kind damage that created two lines on upper corner of the print. The lines are three dimensional, either buckling or maybe some kind of insect got under there. I honestly held this picture, admiring it and taking several photos, and only noticed this when I took it in outdoor light, but there is definitely something going on there, once you see it you do notice it. There might be a fix, will leave this to the buyer.

This auction is for both pictures. Will pack carefully.
