Description
Hello, Thanks for checking out my auction! Here,up for your consideration is an Antique Japanese Woodblock print fitted into a wooden tray with glass,
presumed to be 19th century.
I can't identify the maker, and neither could the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. They have the same print in their Japanese Postcard Collection
(see in photos, the museum's print titled "distant sailboats").
It does, though, look like possibly the work of Suziki Kason or Ohara Koson or even Hiroshige.
You, though, have to make that determination as to whom the maker is.
Nonetheless, this
tray is so charming
(9 1/4" x 7 5/8" overall, 12" wide including the handles).
It depicts (2) Wasen Boats typical of the Meiji / Taisho Period.
It looks to be later in the day because of the shadows on the water.
There is a mountain range and faint sailboats in the distance.
The paper appears to be wove.
There are four rubber "feet" on the back. The wood on the frame has some nics and scratches and the handles are tarnished.
The size of the print (not taken out of the frame) measures approx. 7 3/4" x 6".
There is an old label on the back of the tray that reads S. B.W. Scott Book and Art Shop Geneva, N.Y.
This shop had art shows in the early 1900's and represented / exhibited fine artists.
Please view all the photos as they tell the story better than I can describe.
Please email with any questions.
